Shipping at Malta: September 2011

Images from my latest visit to Malta..... the usual wide variety of ship types seen around Valletta and the Grand Harbour, and a brief visit to the container terminal at Marsaxlokk. Click on one of the following categories, or scroll down to see all the images.

ASTOR
Seen alongside in the Grand Harbour and at sea after sailing on 26th September.



CELEBRITY SOLSTICE
Sailing out of the Grand Harbour and out to sea beyond the breakwater on 27th September.




COSTA CONCORDIA
Seen sailing out of the Grand Harbour under nightfall on 23rd September, then alongside on 30th September.




MSC FANTASIA
Arriving and sailing on 28th September.





~  ~  ~  PART 2: CONTAINER SHIPS AT MARSAXLOKK AND VALLETTA ~  ~  ~

CMA CGM CHOPIN
The first photograph taken of this vessel in drydock was on 26th September. The rest of the images were taken on 30th September with repainting well under way.




CMA CGM MEDEA
Photographed alongside at Marsaxlokk on 28th September.



CMA CGM MOLIERE / JAGUAR / JOHN MITCHELL / LILLY MITCHELL
The first two images show vessels alongside at Marsaxlokk on 28th September, while the third picture shows the 'Mitchell sisters' laid up at Valletta two days later.



NEDLLOYD MARITA
Photographed alongside at Marsaxlokk and then sailing on 28th September.




PAULINE
Seen alongside at Marsaxlokk on 28th September in the first photo, then entering Valletta's Grand Harbour under tow the following day in the next five images. The last two pictures show her alongside at the Palumbo shipyard on the 30th.




RENATE P (ex-HUSKY RUNNER)
In drydock at the Palumbo yard on 30th September. Parts of her previous name can just be made out on her stern.

AGGELIKI
Photographed alongside in Valletta on 30th September.



BELUGA SYDNEY
Seen alongside at the Palumbo yard. The first photograph was taken on 26th September, while the rest were taken on the 30th.




OXL AVENIR
Seen alongside in the Grand Harbour on 26th September.



STORMAN ASIA
This heavy lift vessel was seen alongside in the Grand Harbour. On her deck it is possible to see the cargo she had brought to Valletta - the new bridge that would connect the breakwater at the harbour entrance to the mainland. The first photo was taken on 27th September, and the others on the 30th. The bridge was lifted into position a few days later.




THOR SPIRIT
Another heavy lift vessel alongside in the Grand Harbour on 30th September.



UNIWIND
This general cargo vessel was seen moored in the Grand Harbour and I managed to photograph her from most angles! The upper set of pictures were on taken on 27th September and the lower set three days later.

ENRICA M
This RO/RO vessel was seen alongside in Valletta on 30th September.



EUROCARGO MALTA
Photographed as she sailed out of the Grand Harbour on 24th September.




EUROCARGO VENEZIA
I photographed this vessel both arriving and sailing on 26th September. I even managed to get a picture of her alongside in the Grand Harbour during her call.




GRANDE ANGOLA
This RO/RO vessel was seen in drydock at the Palumbo yard on 30th September.



HOEGH TRAPEZE
Seen passing the breakwater on the morning of 27th September, then alongside and sailing from the Grand Harbour later the same day.




SETUBAL EXPRESS
Alongside in the Grand Harbour on 30th September.




~  ~  ~  PART 5: MISCELLANEOUS VESSELS ~  ~  ~

TANKERS:  ALLORO / KAROL WOJTYLA / SPIRO F / XLENDI BAY / MISTRA BAY
The stern of ALLORO was all that could be seen of her on 30th September as BELUGA SYDNEY was moored alongside her. KAROL WOJTYLA was seen exiting the Grand Harbour on the 23rd. SPIRO F was moored in Pretty Bay on the 28th and the two "Bay" tankers were seen alongside each other at Valletta on the 30th.



RESEARCH VESSELS:  HUGIN EXPLORER / GEO BARENTS / WG VESPUCCI
HUGIN EXPLORER was seen leaving the Grand Harbour on 24th September (top row), while GEO BARENTS was spotted from the Upper Barracca Gardens on the 26th and WG VESPUCCI was alongside in the Grand Harbour on the 30th.




TUG AND TOW:  MARIDIVE 702 towing MARIDIVE OFFSHORE BASE
I just managed to catch this 2011-built tug before she disappeared from sight behind the bastian walls of Valletta on 25th September. However, I got some good shots of her as she emerged later the same day, with MARIDIVE OFFSHORE BASE in tow.




MOTOR YACHT:  RISING SUN
David Geffen's 136 metre long motor yacht RISING SUN, seen alongside in the Grand Harbour on 30th September.



VARIOUS SHIPS:  ISKATEL-2 / AL ENTISAR / P21 / MARIA-C
Deck cargo ship ISKATEL-2 and tuna longliner AL ENTISAR were both alongside at Valletta on 30th September and Maltese patrol boat P21 entered Marsamxett Harbour on the same day. MARIA-C was seen entering the Grand Harbour on the 27th.



AT THE SHIPYARD:  ALLORO / BELUGA SYDNEY / PAULINE / CMA CGM CHOPIN
And finally..... a few more shots of the vessels that were alongside at the Palumbo shipyard, including CMA CGM CHOPIN in drydock.
